A Baby Girl and Her Dog - Lifestyle Newborn Photoshoot

Choosing to do a lifestyle newborn photoshoot has definite perks. One such perk is the opportunity to include all of the family members into the photos, including the family pet. Personally, dogs are my favorite. When I walk into my client’s home and see a four-legged furry , my heart skips a beat. I just know in that moment, that the session will be a great joy. A dog can add so much energy and character to a photo session.

This pup’s name is Bernie and he is absolutely in love with his newborn baby sister. He is also one of the smartest dogs I’ve seen and uniquely aware of what is happening around him. You would think, judging by these photos that we’ve used lot’s of coaching and treats, but you’d be surprised to know that no incentives were necessary. Bernie followed the camera and positioned himself in the most perfect way. He just adores the newest member of the family and if not stopped he would give her kisses all day long.

Something tells me that Bernie and his human baby sister will be best of friends.

A Helpful Tip

One thing to keep in mind before including your pet into the session, is the dog’s energy level. If possible, it’s good to give him/her, a nice long walk prior to the shoot. The walk helps bring excitement and energy levels down and it makes it that much easier for photographer to work.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography | The Right Choice for the Modern Mom

The purpose of this article is to provide some insight of why choosing a lifestyle newborn session is the right choice for a modern mom and dad. Early on in my photography career, I followed some of the traditional concepts for newborn shoots.  The traditional method involves setting babies in adorable poses with prop equipment (e.g., beanbags, baskets) and accessories (e.g., headbands, hats).  However, over the years, I have discovered my love for lifestyle sessions.  The lifestyle method is a much more organic approach to capturing a newborn in the first few weeks of his or her precious life.  Lifestyle photography is about capturing your new baby in a very natural and honest way and it’s about portraying the special connection between the parents and child. It is minimalistic in approach with main focus on shared moments between family members and the natural beauty of a newborn baby.

Home is where the heart is.

A family’s home is an ideal location for a newborn session. Parents and children alike feel more comfortable at home.  The added comfort allows the family to feel more at ease.  As a result, the family is more likely to exhibit the unique aspects of their relationship with one another, including a shared love and happiness.  The home is also where a family spends a majority of their time after the birth of their child, and thus, is an appropriate stage for capturing these early moments.  Finally, in choosing to select the home as the setting for the newborn session, the family has the opportunity to show off the baby’s nursery.  At home session provides a perfect chance for parents to implement their own style. Parents often decorate their child’s nursery with such love and care that it would be a shame not to preserve its memory.

Natural beauty.

The goal of a lifestyle newborn session is to photograph the baby in natural poses.  We want to capture the baby as he or she naturally lays, sleeps, explores her/his environment visually and even sometimes flashes a smile. In so doing, we can preserve a memory that reflects the true personality and uniqueness of each child.  A real memory, as opposed to just another cute picture.  Another goal is to use items that are on hand and specific to the family photographed while still trying to keep the environment simple and organic. Such items may include the baby’s blanket, stuffed animal, the parent’s favorite outfit for him or her, or a favorite swaddle.  Sometimes, even a family pet that loves to lay next to the child may end up being a great addition to a picture.

Families, families, families.

Lifestyle photography sessions do not solely focus on close-ups of the newborn.  Rather, an equal portion of the shoot is dedicated to photographing the family’s interaction: the emotion and joy between the parents, the parents and child(ren), and sometimes, the extended family.  I adore catching that perfect moment when a new dad looks at his bundle of joy with pure love in his eyes or capturing the smile only a mom can make when looking at her newborn. Those honest connections are impossible to recreate in the studio environment.

Just Relax.

Unlike more traditional newborn sessions, lifestyle sessions are much more relaxed.  We don’t adhere to a strict timeline or design.  We go with the flow and let the child lead, relieving the stress normally attributed to traditional shoots.  When the baby sleeps, I have the opportunity to capture his or her natural un-posed beauty.  When the baby is awake, I can capture the parents cuddling or playing with him or her.  The relaxed environment helps the parents, who are already dealing with a great deal of stress, and also helps prevent the baby from getting upset. Baby doesn’t need to “perform” in any sort of way and parents get to enjoy all the moments as they naturally occur.

No Rush, Baby!

Traditional photographers looking to pose newborns in specific positions must schedule the session shortly after the child’s birth, typically within five to ten days. The reason is that babies sleep more during the first days after their birth and photographers can easily manipulate them into cute poses. One great advantage to lifestyle photography is that families do not necessarily have to rush to have a photography session within the first couple of weeks after bringing their baby home. While it is nice to capture these early moments, parents have a lot to handle at this time, and may need additional days to prepare for the shoot. With lifestyle photography, a newborn need not be asleep during the shoot, so it allows more flexibility.

Timeless.

Traditional methods of posing or dressing a baby often follow popular styles for the given period.  The problem is that such poses, props or outfits go out of style in time.  What might be popular today may look out-of-date when you later flip through your photo album.  A lifestyle session avoids the risk and temptation of temporary fads.  Instead, we capture the true and unique qualities of your newborn, family, and home.  These memories will never go out of style.

lifestyle-session.jpg

Emotional Storytelling.

Lifestyle newborn session is not just about taking beautiful photos, it is about creating a story, a story that is specific only to the family photographed. The first moments when new life is brought into a home is the happiest of times. Parents are filled with emotions of love and joy. New experiences are created and shared. A lifestyle newborn session documents these special moments and at the same time conveys in the most authentic way a beautiful story of one’s life.

Bump To Baby Photoshoots in Walnut Creek and San Francisco

Something some of you know, but most of you may not, is that I moved to this country as a refugee. I was born in Croatia and as a child I survived the ugliness of a war that ravaged the area formerly known as Yugoslavia. This war ultimately led me to the United States, and resulted in me settling in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I am hesitant to complain. Even though I am completely assimilated as an American some twenty years after arriving in this country, I still occasionally get a tinge of nostalgia. To cure the nostalgia, I travel to Croatia almost yearly, and I also often rock out to the 90s Yugo pop music (especially when editing photos while home alone). I especially love to meet people from my neck of the woods who share similar experiences as mine. So, when I got the email from Vesna I was super excited to photograph both the maternity and newborn sessions for her and her husband Matt.

About the Maternity Session

Vesna’s husband Matt was born and raised in Walnut Creek, so for the maternity session we chose to stay close to where he grew up. We decided on the beautiful Shell Ridge open space and Borges Ranch as our photo destination. The open space looks so gorgeous as the sun falls behind the rolling hills and the Ranch gave us a lot of variety to play with, and even a few goats to include in the photos for fun.

About the Lifestyle Newborn Session

Vesna and Matt have a beautiful condo in San Francisco which they completely remodeled and which Vesna decorated herself. I was thrilled when I saw large windows and fantastic natural light throughout the space. Their baby boy was so adorable and so easy to photograph. He cooperated during the entire three hour session.

Needless to say, this Bump to Baby journey was a joy to photograph! Enjoy.

Lifestyle Newborn Session with Twin Babies and Toddler | San Francisco Photographer

Guys, how cute is this lifestyle session with twin babies and their toddler “big” sister? Even with ten years of experience photographing babies in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is not too often that I get to photograph twin newborns and especially not twins with a three year old older sibling. Actually, I am pretty sure this was my first such combination. I loved every moment of this lifestyle session including shooting and editing. Finally now I get to pick my favorite images to show off. Choosing favorites was not an easy task at all because the gallery ended up being huge, with 150 different captures, and you can imagine how narrowing it down can be slightly difficult.

About the Newborn Session

I was excited, to say the least, when I first entered this family’s beautiful home in the Orinda hills. It is always the unexpected that gets my creative juices flowing so I usually welcome a touch of uncertainty but this particular day was slightly worrisome to me as a natural light photographer. It was so dark and gloomy and it rained all day long with no break in sight. As I was driving the curvy mountain road up to the house I was hoping that there would be enough light and I would not have to postpone the session. As I entered, I saw the beautiful living space with huge windows and I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew immediately that it would work, erasing any doubts I had.

My favorite part during the whole session was the twins’ older sister who was so sweet and loving. She was giving her new sister and brother lot’s of kisses and hugs.

This session is an excellent example of why I love newborn photography. The precious memories of those very first moments when this sweet family became a party of five is captured by me and these images will now last forever. Enjoy!

Twin Lifestyle Newborn Session | San Francisco Photographer

Whoa, it has been so long since my last post. I have been so busy and now I am finally coming up for air. Between my son being out of school, the holidays and bunch of photoshoots I am slowly coming back to normal. I can not wait to blog about the sessions that I did but for now I have a teaser shot from a lifestyle newborn session with twin babies and their three year old big sister. I don’t get to photograph twins all that often so I was super excited and ready for the challenge. I will be posting a more complete blog post very soon from this session. It’s definitely one of my recent favorites in the newborn category.

With little to no prompting this little three year old girl was cuddling and giving her brother kisses during the entire photoshoot. It was unbelievable. Her parents told me that she is in awe of them and that she thinks they are just the cutest. I happen to that too.

Golden Retriever Puppy and Baby | Lifestyle Newborn Session

Today’s lifestyle newborn session was twice as adorable. This golden retriever puppy was super excited to sit next to her newborn baby sister. She even stole one kiss. I’m thankful for my fast camera skills because this moment lasted a mili-second.

In home lifestyle newborn session in San Francisco

This lifestyle newborn session which I photographed at my client’s home in San Francisco was such a treat for me. Three years prior I photographed baby Blair there and now it was baby Elin’s turn. It was so wonderful to see Blair being so sweet and loving towards her little sister. She even held her and was giving her kisses.

One of major perks of my job is getting a call from past clients who are adding one more baby. Such sessions are filled with emotion and tender moments that are simply not to be missed.

Lifestyle newborn session with the Rothe Family | Oakland Family Photographer

This at-home lifestyle newborn session was such a treat for me.  I got to see one of my cutest little clients after four years and I got to meet his little sister.  Baby Flora is only 10 days new and so adorable.  Her big brother is so loving and so sweet with her.

I love it when my clients have full trust in me and let me do my thing.  We spent three hours together and it really didn't feel that way.  It was a relaxed atmosphere and in return we captured some beautiful memories.

These first moments when you bring a new family member home are so precious.  The curiosity of baby Flora's big brother and first kisses are something families are going to smile at ten years from now. Kids grow fast and change even faster, freezing moments with my camera and transforming them into photographs is so important and priceless.

Newborn Lifestyle Photo Session | What to Wear

One of the most frequent questions that I get from my clients is what to wear during a lifestyle newborn photo session. Those first few weeks after a baby's arrival can be hectic and the last thing you need to be concerned about is what to wear.  I want you to feel beautiful and confident and not to worry about anything else other than loving your new bundle of joy.  Once you have decided on your wardrobe, everything else will fall into place.

Here are some tips on what to wear during a newborn lifestyle photo session:

1.  Stay in your "Fashion Lane"

First and foremost, I like to emphasize that your style and personality are very important. Let your every day wardrobe influence your outfit for this photo session.  Staying within your "fashion lane" is basically listening to your inner fashionista and wearing what makes you, you.

what-to-wear-for-newborn-session.jpg

2.  Light and Neutral Color Palette

We want your baby to be the central focus of the session so keeping everything else simple and neutral is kind of the key.  Soft pastels such as blush, grey, browns work great.  If you are running out of ideas, white/grey and ivory/brown color combinations are always a good option but please don't exactly match with your spouse, rather coordinate within the same color scheme.

If I were to pick one color that you should stay away from, I would say to definitely avoid BLACK.

what-to-wear-newborn-session-idea.jpg

3. Play with Texture

Texture is just as important as the color that you are working with.  It gives dimension to the images and can add additional softness.  Layering can also help in adding more interest and can be very flattering. Many new moms feel uncomfortable with their post pregnancy bodies and it is very important that you feel confident and beautiful. A white tee with a soft grey cardigan would for example be a great choice.

what-to-wear-for-newborn-session-idea.jpg

4.  Keeping it Casual

Lifestyle newborn sessions are photographed in the comfort of your home.  Therefore you should compliment the "comfort" only a home can provide by opting for a more casual option when it comes to clothing.  I would stay away from fancy dresses and especially high heels.  I would even go further to suggest that bare feet look most natural in a home setting.  The clothing should compliment the surroundings.

bay-area-lifestyle-newborn-nursery.jpg

5.  Movement

Before making a final decision on what to wear, I would do a what I call "movement challenge".  We will be photographing you laying down, standing up, from up above, from below...  the clothing should allow you to move as freely as you can. Not to forget, you will most likely be doing some diaper changes and feeds during the session.  One of my go-to suggestions is a long flowy dress in a soft pastel color (white and ivory also work well).  I personally love when new mothers wear dresses, it's often the easiest choice and it always garners the most compliments.

what-to-wear-newborn-session-photo-example.jpg

6. Baby Attire

I prefer babies dressed very simply in plain white onesies, wrapped in muslin swaddles or to just be in a diaper. The most important thing to pay attention to is that we want the chosen outfit to fit snug. Recently, I’ve fallen in love with knotted gowns and swaddles by Lou Lou and Co. that come in very beautiful designs. If we photograph your baby in the diaper, I find that diapers from The Honest Co. photograph very well. Including a special item that holds meaning is always encouraged. Often, my clients have a blanket that they had as a baby themselves or for example a hat that someone in the family knitted and I am happy to include them in the session.

My favorite go to stores are:

Madewell

Lou and Grey

Banana Republic

Kit and Ace

Anthropologie
